The Value Of Learning Styles Survey

By Carolyn King

Each person has a distinct learning style that determines how effective he or she is in absorbing content. This knowledge is important to prevent time wastage in exercises that do not lead to better grades. Learning styles survey will help teachers to better handle pupils and thus get the most out of the available contact hours. The existence of different methods explains why some subjects are easier to understand than others.

Learners are grouped into three main categories depending on their style. Some are tactile while others are visual and the last group being that of auditory learners. Most learners utilize a combination of methods but one of them will be the most dominant. By consulting a professional, it is possible to identify a style that suits a particular child. With this in mind, it is easier to deliver content and get expected results.

The survey involves questions aimed at establishing the character of a learner. They range from the books he or she reads, how to find solutions in difficult situations, action in public areas, etc. The questions may also touch on reaction when something happens, e. G. When attacked by an animal. The answers provided point at reactions and perspective about life.

Visual learners are a category that best absorb information from maps, charts and diagrams. Their minds work by creating relationships or connections between information and images or techniques. This is their best way of remembering concepts taught in class. Long texts and narrations are always boring for this group. It is usually a waste of time to sit through narratives. Their solutions are based on diagrams or images.

Auditory learners understand best when a speech or narrative is given. This makes their memory of spoken words excellent. They prefer listening to endless speeches and narrations other than using diagrams. This way, they can capture a lot of what needs to be learnt. Their concentration or eye contact with the person making the presentation may be off. This does not mean that their attention is divided. You will be surprised to hear them ask questions on subjects mentioned as a by the way.

Those who learn by engaging are referred to as tactile or kinesthetic learners. Their best class is where they are involved in experiments. They believe in physical results more than narratives. Kinesthetic learners express their ideas or desires by acting them out. You need to know how to decipher such signals.

Each class is composed of learners who follow different methods. For teachers or facilitators, there is need to combine a variety of teaching methods. This will take care of the needs and interests of different persons. Evaluate the best method to use in order to effectively explain a certain concept. Subjects that do not have demonstrations, for instance history, can be spiced by a visit to a historical site.

To clearly understand the style of a student and thus handle him or her better, use a professionally designed test. You will get wrong and misleading results if you use amateurish tests. Use a combination of methods to ensure effectiveness in delivery of content. Different concepts or topics will be best understood when different methods are used.
